Little Rock GRECC Research: Alzheimer ’s disease, Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism in the Elderly, Functional Rehabilitation.

Accomplishments: The Little Rock GRECC has been serving elderly Veterans in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and east Texas since 1977. In fiscal year 2009 the Little Rock GRECC published 33 peer reviewed papers, provided 2,835 person hours of geriatric education, and expended $1,574,544 in research awards. Its current research interests include: the cellular and molecular biology of aging; the mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease; outcomes of clinical care; nutrition, exercise, and metabolism in the elderly; and functional rehabilitation.

Health Services: Clinical Outcomes Research:
Develop targeting criteria to identify patients at high risk for poor clinical outcomes in various clinical settings.

Education Focus: Hosts a Geriatric Fellowship Program, Senior Student Outpatient Selective, Mandatory Junior Student Clinical Rotation, Outreach Training Programs in other VA Medical Centers; Traineeships in nursing, pharmacy, dietetics and occuational therapy; Dietetic Intern rotation; provides ongoing staff development and continuing education programs on a number of aging issues.

Clinical Focus: Through Geriatrics and Extended Care Services hosts a 20-bed Geriatric Evaluation and Management Unit (GEM) that provides rehabilitation and recuperative care, a Home Based Primary Care Program (HBPC), Adult Day Health Care Program (ADHC), an Independent Living Program, a 178-bed Nursing Home Care Unit and a Geriatric Ambulatory Care FIRM. In addition to providing care appropriate to their focus, all programs provide education for residents, students and other trainees including medical, nursing, dietetics and allied health students.
