Energy Efficiency Tips and Facts

Energy efficient lightbulb
  • When possible use natural light by opening blinds during the day; keep blinds drawn during a hot summer day.
  • Turn off unnecessary lights and turn off lights when leaving rooms for more than a few minutes.
  • Make sure floor or wall vents are not blocked by furniture or other barriers.
  • Unplug cell phone chargers when not in use; they continue to use power when plugged in even if they are not actively charging a cell phone.
  • Share printers with co-workers instead of maintaining individual printers.
  • When possible print in black and white rather than color.
  • Connect your office electronics to a power strip and switch them off at the end of the day. See related fact (2)
  • When possible, use the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Unplug or turn off appliances and electronics when they are not in use.  See related fact (1)
  • Use a thermos instead of a hot plate or electric warmer.
  • Avoid using space heaters.
