Health Resource Center Participates in VA Direct Hire Initiative
The Direct Hire Initiative provides Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) special hiring authorities for Veterans. It gives special consideration to eligible Veterans that separated under honorable conditions, based on the following criteria: Veterans are eligible under the Direct Hire initiative if they are 30% or greater Service Connected Disabled, or have been in combat, or have recently separated (within the last 3 years).
This program is important to Veterans because it provides Non-Competitive Consideration to Veterans. This means the job does not have to be advertised. If an opening exists, up to GS-11, the VA can fill that position with a qualified Direct Hire Veteran. The Veteran must have the required skills and qualifications to successfully accomplish positional duties. Additionally, if the Veteran is 30% or greater Service Connected Disabled, then no grade restrictions exist (up to GS-15).
Health Resource Center Hits the Road
The Health Resource Center's (HRC) Veteran Outreach Team visits the following locations to educate Veterans and transitioning Military Service Members on job opportunities at the HRC and the Direct Hire Initiative:
Direct Hire Program Proven Successful
In the third quarter of fiscal year 2014, the HRC Veteran Outreach Team recruited and brought onboard 19 Veterans. The team has another 50 Veterans currently applying for, and in the process of qualifying for, various positions within the HRC. The word is spreading fast that the HRC is a Veteran friendly place to work. HRC even had a Veteran call and begin the Direct Hire application process from Afghanistan.
