One highlight of the meeting included a session on Training a Community-Oriented Primary Care Workforce. The session was presented by Rebecca L Shunk, MD, and Susan Janson, PhD. RN, ANP, DNSc, FAAN, Co-Directors of the VA San Francisco Center of Excellence, Primary Care Education (CoEPCE) and Stuart Gilman, MD, MBA (Director of VA’s CoEPCE national program) started off the presentation around the history of and foundation for the program. VA’s Shunk and Jansen presentation contributed to the community health focus through reflection of interprofessional activities and trainee involvement around VA San Francisco’s CoEPCE (EdPACT) at the downtown San Francisco VA Outpatient Clinic and Homeless Veterans program. AAMC attendees heard about the dynamics of VA’s PACT (Patient Aligned Care Teams), the interprofessional models of primary care to support the needs of vulnerable Veterans and how the CoEPCE trainees are integrated into and gain unique experiences in team based training and models of care. The panel session was moderated by George Thibault, MD, President of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation and focused on the importance of role modeling for high functioning interprofessional collaboration. In addition to the Centers of Excellence leadership, speakers for this session included Claire Pomeroy, M.D.,M.B.A., Vice Chancellor, Human Health Sciences & Dean, School of Medicine, University of California, Davis, School of Medicine and Pedro Jose Greer, MD, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs & Chair, Department of Humanities, Health, and Society, Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.
