The Chillicothe VA Medical Center is located 5 miles north of Chillicothe on 308 acres of rural land once occupied by World War I Camp Sherman - the third largest training camp in the nation during the First World War. The beautiful campus-style facility provides acute and chronic mental health services, primary and secondary medical services, extended care, a wide range of nursing home care services, and serves as a chronic mental health referral center for other VA facilities in southern Ohio. An active ambulatory care setting, including several mental health services, specialty medical services and specialized women Veterans clinics is also available. Patients requiring tertiary medical services are referred to VA facilities in Cincinnati (105 miles) or Dayton (75 miles).
Clinic Hours:The Chillicothe VAMC operates five Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Athens, Cambridge, Lancaster, Marietta, and Portsmouth, Ohio, as well as one Outreach Clinic (ORC) in Wilmington, Ohio. Community-based programs include Home Based Primary Care (HBPC), Care Coordination, Mental Health Intensive Case Management (MHICM), Community Nursing Home and a Community Residential Care Program. The Medical Center is staffed 24/7 with a full complement of clinics and administrative services available Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding Federal Holidays. Community Based Outpatient Clinics are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding Federal Holidays. The Wilmington Outreach Clinic is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding Federal Holidays and Tuesdays. Outpatient pharmacy services are provided Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding Federal Holidays.
Affiliations: The Chillicothe VAMC has affiliations with the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM), A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Kettering Health Network-Grandview Medical Center and The Ohio State University College of Optometry and Dentistry for the purposes of education, training and research. As rotations in the mental health field are in high demand there are nursing affiliations with Ohio University, Hocking College, University of Rio Grande, Wright State University, Otterbein University, Southern State Community College and Chamberlain College of Nursing. Other active educational programs involve psychology, pharmacy, social work, physician assistants, dietetics, radiation therapy technology, respiratory therapy, physical therapy assistant, bio-medical equipment technology, health administration and audiology.
Each fiscal year has seen an increase in the number of residents, interns and students completing rotations at this medical center. In FY12 there were 587 trainees. A large majority of these trainees are from the local area nursing schools and in FY12 approximately 421 nursing students participated in clinical rotations at our facility.
In FY12, pharmacy was a highly sought after clinical experience and had 14 trainees in rotations from The Ohio State University, Ohio Northern University, University of Cincinnati, University of Findlay and University of Charleston.
On July 1, 2010, an osteopathic psychiatry residency program was sponsored by Grandview Medical Center in Dayton in joint collaboration with OU-HCOM and the Chillicothe VAMC. This was the first osteopathic program of this type in the state of Ohio. In this four-year training program the psychiatry residents will conduct some of their clinical rotations at the Chillicothe VAMC. In Academic Year 2012, the Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA) awarded a new rural one-year psychology internship to the Chillicothe VAMC. These are just a few of our ongoing academic programs that will fulfill a critical service need for our rural Veterans and will supply a pool of qualified professionals from which to recruit.
RESEARCH The Chillicothe VA Medical Center’s research program has been incorporated as part of the VAMC Cincinnati’s program. The University of Cincinnati Institutional Review Board is used by both facilities.
