The Dorn VAMC opened in 1932 at its current location in Columbia, S.C., and consists of seven Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) located in the Upstate, Midlands and Pee Dee areas of the state in Anderson, Greenville, Florence, Orangeburg, Spartanburg, Sumter and Rock Hill. All clinics with the exception of Rock Hill are VA staffed. Rock Hill CBOC opened a new clinic on July 2, 2012. To keep up with the demand for access and workload, Greenville moved into a new 70,000+ sq. ft. clinic in August 2013. Anderson will have a new location and expanded space in 2014.
Administrative support is provided for the Florence National Cemetery in Florence, SC and Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC; the Vet Centers located in Greenville, SC and Columbia, SC; and the VA Regional Office is located on the west side of the Dorn VA campus.
Dorn VAMC is a level 1C teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, education, and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, cardiology, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Dorn VAMC was fully accredited by The Joint Commission in February 2013. The facility is accredited by the American College of Surgeons and the Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities in the Health Care for Homeless Veteran Program, the Psychosocial Residential Recovery Program, Pain Program, and the Mental Health Intensive Case Management program. Pathology & Laboratory Medicine is accredited by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists. In addition to Dorn and its affiliated CBOCs, the PCR Lab offers testing to VISN 7 facilities.
The Veterans Benefits Administration and the University of South Carolina School Of Medicine are located on the campus of Dorn VAMC. Active relationships exist with the Department of Defense at Fort Jackson and Shaw Air Force Base. For FY 2013, Dorn VAMC gained 2.8 percent in enrolled patients. In FY 2013, there were a total of 75,813 unique patients. In this population are 6,381 female Veterans and 15,829 Veterans in the OIF/OEF/OND period of service. In FY 13, there were 936,424 outpatient visits and 5,005 inpatients treated. Dorn receives the highest number of Compensation & Pension (C&P) examination requests in the nation. There are approximately 2,043 FTEE for the medical center and its system of clinics.
Dorn VAMC is dedicated to educating future health care professionals and has 148 affiliation agreements in 28 disciplines with 90 institutions including: the USC School Of Medicine, Palmetto Health Richland, Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, Midlands Technical College, the SC College of Pharmacy, and the USC College Of Nursing. The Dorn VAMC provides training to approximately 730 trainees per year. In FY 2013, 150 residents & fellows rotated through 50 positions.
