The Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center is one of 150 VA medical centers nationwide.  The medical center and its outpatient clinics in Spring City and Springfield, Pa. comprise an integrated health care system dedicated to providing Veterans with health care that improves their health and well-being.

Programs and treatment are focused heavily on mental health care, geriatrics and extended care, primary care, specialty and women’s health care, rehabilitative services, pharmacy and social work services for outpatients, residential patients and inpatients. The 42-building campus-style facility sits on 128 acres and celebrates its 85th anniversary in November 2015.  The medical center has an annual budget of approximately $190 million, and employs more than 1,200 health care and administrative professionals.  In fiscal year 2014, the medical center served 19,477 Veterans.

The Coatesville VA Medical Center operates 452 inpatient and residential beds, and serves as a VA specialty referral facility for inpatient and residential mental health programs.  In terms of inpatient beds, there are medical, psychiatry, and community living center (24 hour nursing care), including a highly regarded hospice unit.  In terms of residential beds, there is a Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program, which is comprised of a Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veterans Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program and Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program.  Additionally, some beds are dedicated to a separate all female program that comprises all RRTPs while also specializing in military sexual trauma treatment.

The Coatesville VA Medical Center offers outpatient primary care through Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT), and mental health outpatient care through Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) teams.  Some specialty care is available including optometry, podiatry, pulmonary, podiatry, neurology, infectious disease, dental and more. Many services are available through Telehealth technology.

Additional medical supportive services include pharmacy, pathology and laboratory, imaging, physical medicine and rehabilitation, speech pathology and audiology.  The Chaplaincy program provides spiritual support across all health care service lines.

Additionally, Mental Health Intensive Case Management supports at risk Veterans.  The medical center also has expansive social work homeless programming that compliments the DCHV-RRTP including Homeless Outreach, Health Care for Homeless Veterans, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development and Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing which allocates up to 444 Section 8 housing vouchers to Veterans.  Further, social work services support other special endeavors including newly returning Veterans, suicide prevention, veterans justice outreach, caregiver support, women Veterans health care and more.

Two non-VA organizations, the Veterans Multi-Service Center and Fresh Start, Inc., operate residential housing facilities for Veterans on the campus.  The Mary E. Walker House provides transitional housing for homeless women Veterans, and LZII and Fresh Start provide transitional housing for homeless male Veterans.  Independence Hall is a contracted transitional residence program for male Veterans with serious mental illness.
