Valerie Mattison Brown was appointed to the position of Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) on April 26th, 2020. In this role Ms. Mattison Brown has the unique opportunity to transform the mission of the Office of Policy and Planning to the new Chief Strategy Office as created by the recent VHA Central Office redesign.  As the CSO, she will serve as the principle advisor to the Under Secretary and Deputy Under Secretary for Health on all matters related to enterprise-wide strategic direction to facilitate decision-making and guide transformative healthcare for Veterans.    

Ms. Mattison Brown joined the VHA in 2017 and previously served as the Assistant Deputy Undersecretary for Health for Policy and Planning where she was accountable for the development of long-range policy, planning and forecasting activities used to set the direction and improve the VA health care delivery system. Prior to her appointment in VHA, she served in a variety of strategic health care policy and operations leadership roles within the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Prior to her Federal experience, Ms. Mattison Brown developed her professional skills in the private sector at the multi-national professional services firm, EY (Ernst & Young), and a variety of Fortune 500 companies with a focus on healthcare and financial services. 

Ms. Mattison Brown has a history of exceptional and results driven leadership.  She is the recipient of a myriad of leadership, performance, and special recognition awards including the HHS Secretary’s Distinguished Service Award. She is the mother of three and spouse of a recently retired Army Colonel. She continues to serve the needs of military families and Veterans in her community as well as young adults aspiring to leadership roles in their professions.
