Census Maps Instructions
Instructions for generating Census maps wich correspond to VSSC Maps Report To generate a Census maps report, follow the steps below.
- Go to the US Census Bureau Web site: http://factfinder.census.gov
- On the far left, select "Maps and Geography."
- In the center, select "Thematic Maps." A sample map will appear.
- Near the top, select "Themes" from the line that reads: "You are here: Main>All Data Sets>Data Sets with Thematic Maps>Themes>Results."
- Scroll down to the themes for Percent of Persons, TM-3004a to TM-3014. Other data sets are available for other puposes, but they will not be comparable to the VSSC maps.
- Select a theme, such as "TM-P004i - Percent of Persons who are White Alone, not Hispanic or Latino."
- Scroll to the right and click "Show Result."
- A map will appear which is comparable to the VSSC maps, except the data is shown by State rather than by VISN, Area, or MSN. In both maps, increased percent representation will be indicated by darker colors.
- To get more detailed information, the zoom option is not helpful in Census maps by State. Instead, change the option above the map from State to County or 3-digit Zip Code. A new national map will appear. There are three ways to narrow the focus of the map: use the pointer to click on a specific are, use the zoom feature at the right, or use the address feature below the map.
Note that the Census maps do not provide data by the detailed breakouts available on the VSSC site, such as occupation, gender, pay plan, grade etc.
