Diversity Management and Equal Employment Opportunity

Online Diversity Data Reports

A large portion of VA's workforce is either retirement eligible now or will become eligible in the next few years. There are numerous efforts to predict the needed recruitment of new employees and to prepare current employees for promotions as vacancies occur.

The Office of Diversity Management and Equal Employment Opportunity (DM&EEO) has prepared on-line data reports that pull together the information necessary for this prediction and preparation, formatted to facilitate the inclusion of the inherent diversity issues. These reports support analysis at the individual occupation level as well as the organization level nationally, regionally, or at the facility level. These reports add important detail to the overview reports prepared by other offices. But the utility of the reports is far broader than specific diversity issues.

As an example, the Diversity Change report looks like this:

Table breakdown of minority employee statistics

This report shows an increase of 3,840 full- and part-time permanent staff in VA for the first 10 months of FY03. The representation of White men decreased by about a third of one percent, while women of all groups increased a corresponding third of one percent. There were also some small changes in the "other" race category that is not shown above because it is not applicable. All the diversity reports include a complete list of the selection parameters at the bottom of the report.

There are two general categories of diversity data reports:

EEO Reports, which provide a diversity breakout formatted for specific types of workforce analysis; and
Maps Reports, which show the level of representation of one demographic variable you select, broken out by VHA VISN, VBA Area, or NCA MSN.

Report Variables - You may customize the diversity reports to meet your specific needs by choosing variables from the lists of available options on the selection screen for each report. The selection screens are divided into the major variables, called Steps, each with a list of options for one variable. Click here for an in-depth description of these variables.

As a result of this selection screen layout, the reports are very easy to generate. No programming knowledge is required.

Access to On-line Data - These workforce analysis tools are only available on the VSSC intranet site (for VA employees only). For access information, contact Mike Dole, Director of Workforce Analysis and Evaluation, at (202) 501-1975. See also: Census 2000 EEO Data Tool and Instructions .

Available Reports - All of the diversity reports are under the Human Resources folder at the left of the VSSC screen. The various diversity reports are each designed to facilitate workforce analysis of one specific topic. There are currently 16 reports, with more under development including reports for Gains and Losses, Diversity Goal Accomplishment, Noteworthy Activities, PDP Report, and other topics.

Report Generation - After selecting any needed specifications, click on "Submit" at the bottom of the screen to create the report. The output appears on your PC screen as soon as it is generated, generally in well under two minutes. The report can be printed, copied and saved as a Word document, copied and pasted into a text document, or downloaded as an EXCEL file. In many reports, the user has the option of viewing the data as a bar chart.
