Was site for territorial
capital and used to protect gold miners from Indians. Fort was ordered abandoned in 1898
and ordered reopened the next day to train troops for Spanish-American War. Troops who
took basic training here became part of Rough Riders. Fiorello La Guardia lived at Fort
Whipple when his father was band master. Quarters, despite stories, were not designed by
Stanford White. They were not built in 1903 as VA records show, but in 1905- 8. All old
fort buildings are significant and some archeological sites associated with original
stockade may still exist along Granite Creek and original hospital site may still be
traceable.

The Mission Style
architecture rises out of the desert and provides a prominent landmark from all major
highways in the southern part of the city. Gold dome is visible for quite a distance.
