Located in crater of dormant volcano; in the center of and overlooking
Honolulu, as well as Pearl Harbor, where it is a major tourist attraction; second most
visited National Cemetery; associated with Pearl Harbor and the Pacific Theater of World
War II.
Old Hawaiian name "PUOWAINA" Translates as "Hill of Sacrifice" from
its role in the Polynesian religious customs. King Kamehameha's American advisory put guns
on the crater to scare off Russians interested in the Sandalwood trade and possible
colonization.
