Former Danville Branch National Home
for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, established 1898. "Uncle Joe" Cannon of
Illinois was Speaker of the House of Representatives when this Branch was established. All
pre-1930 buildings which were part of the Home are significant.

Supply depot buildings remain
from Checkerboard Air Service. From this field Capt. Charles Lindbergh initiated air mail
delivery service between Chicago and St. Louis.
Old hospital named for Edward Hines, Jr. who died in WWI. His father donated 1 million
dollars toward construction with condition hospital be named for his son.

Property was also known as
"Dewey Veterans Administration Hospital". Dewey House (Bldg. 29) Property
formerly parts of Camps Lawrence and McIntyre which were parts of Great Lakes Naval
Training station. Property was taken over in WWI from former owner who built Building 29
as his residence. Designed by David Adler, prominent society architect of the period.
Charles Dewey, original owner, went on to serve as Assist. Secretary of Treasury where he
reduced size of U.S. paper currency, as financial advisor to post WWI Poland, as
Congressmen and other posts. The old "Green Bay Road" gate house was constructed
on foundations of frontier coach house. Ruins of foundation have potential archeological
significance.
