Formerly Western Branch of National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. Established
in 1885 as population moved west, Civil War veterans increased demand and Mexican War
Veterans became eligible for Home care. Most of the original buildings and walkways were
constructed of stone quarried locally and brick manufactured on the site. Excess brick
from the manufactory was sold on the public market. The first trolley car line in the city
of Leavenworth ran between downtown and the Western Branch of the National Home. All
pre-1930 construction is significant. Special interest in the Chapel and old Library.
