Harbor Walk 1884

Former Southern Branch National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, opened in part, to provide care for veterans of U.S. Colored Troops who could not be induced to go North to other home branches. This appears to be the first integrated federal facility in country. Library building and annex date from 1850's Chesapeake Female College. Property taken over by Union to prevent Confederate spying on Fort Monroe. College used as a federal military hospital during Civil War and purchased by Gen. Benj. Butler who sold land to Home for this Branch. Congressional investigation cleared Butler of improper activity. All pre-1930 buildings are significant. Nearby historic sites include Fort Monroe, Hampton Institute and Hampton National Cemeteries.
