The Baltimore GRECC has been serving the needs of elderly Veterans in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and parts of West Virginia since 1992. In fiscal year 2009 staff from the Baltimore GRECC published 61 peer reviewed papers, provided 11,764 person hours of geriatric education, and expended $8,488,268 in research grant funds. Some of its current research interests include: obesity and cardiovascular disease; how aging effects muscle cells and fat cells; the effects of exercise and weight loss on metabolism in obese Veterans and how they effect the risk for cardiovascular disease; how treadmill exercise effects nerve function, muscle function, and metabolism in stroke patients; the role of genomics, genetics, and aging; how exercise rehabilitation impacts the quality of life and health outcomes in chronic stroke victims; the role of genes and lifestyle in the risk for cardiovascular disease with aging; how rehabilitation reduces the negative impact of cardiovascular disease and chronic stroke; and the impact of exercise rehabilitation on the brain creating new pathways after stroke.

Programs include: Geriatric Evaluation and Management inpatient unit, Geriatric Medicine consult service, Baltimore Rehabilitation and Extended Care Center, Dementia Evaluation and Management service, and Senior Exercise Rehabilitation Center. r

Education: Provide continuing education in the form of research updates and educational programs on best practices in clinical geriatrics for VA housestaff, nursing staff, students and ancillary staff, and community outreach through seminars, workshops and web-based educational programs on successful aging, reduction of cardiovascular disease risk, and stroke rehabilitation. As faculty, our mission is to educate students enrolled in UMB professional schools in principles and practice of gerontology and geriatrics
