Helping Vets Find a Job

Crowd of people in a Medical Center lobby

Some of the hundreds of Veterans and their spouses who attended a recent Job Fair at the VA Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi.

Job Fairs at VA Medical Centers across the country are helping Vets meet employers and attend workshops on interviewing skills and resume building.

Just a few examples:

Jackson, Mississippi

A job fair at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center was co-sponsored by the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA), the Mississippi National Guard and the Mississippi Governor’s office. Employers from across the state of Mississippi and educational institutions were on hand.

Area companies and government agencies were there to recruit Veterans looking for work. VA employees helped with enrollment for health care and benefits, and assisted Vets with job training opportunities.

Detroit in June

A Veteran’s Hiring Fair is scheduled June 26-28, 2012, in Detroit’s COBO Center. More than just a typical job fair, the event will offer career opportunities with federal agencies and private sector employers, workshops on interviewing skills, federal resume building, and career coaching.

Salem, Virginia

A Regional Job Fair was held at the Salem, Va., VA Medical Center. About 40 employers and service providers were available to discuss job opportunities and offer assistance to Veterans in completing the application process.

VA staff members were on hand to assist with application submissions, resume preparation, and tips and tools to help Veterans get hired.

Their event was co-sponsored by the Virginia Employment Commission, Virginia Wounded Warrior Program, Roanoke VA Regional Office, and community service providers.

“Veterans are proven performers. They distinguished themselves in uniform and they distinguish themselves as employees.”

— VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki

Albany, New York

In March, the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center hosted a Veterans job fair.

Local employers were on hand to speak with Veterans. Also represented were several state and federal agencies to meet Veterans interested in government service.

Staff members from the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center were there to answer Veterans’ questions about health care and benefits.

It was the first in a series of events planned to bring together local employers and Veterans seeking jobs.

Charleston, South Carolina

A Veterans Job Fair was held recently at the North Charleston Convention Center co-sponsored by the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce.

The event was free and open to Veterans of all eras, active duty military, and their families.

More than 50 area companies, defense contractors and government agencies were onsite to recruit Veterans for available positions. VA also provided onsite enrollment for health care and benefits, and vocational rehabilitation counselors to discuss job training opportunities.
