Teaching with Historic Places

image of Dayton Soldiers Memorial

A Nation Repays Its Debt: The National Soldiers' Home and Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio covers the evolution of a system to honor and care for U.S. veterans beginning with the creation of soldiers' homes and national cemeteries during and after the Civil War. (Grades 5-12)

Camp Chase

Camp Chase cemetery in Columbus, Ohio encompasses less than two acres, so it is hard to imagine that it once was one of the largest Union Civil War prisoner-of-war camps, housing thousands of captured Confederate soldiers. (Grades 5-12)

Many more lesson plans are available at the National Park Service's Teaching with Historic Places Web site.
