National Veterans Wheelchair Games
VA helps sponsor the largest wheelchair games in the world. This tradition started after World War II, when young veterans who had been injured in the war began playing wheelchair basketball in VA hospitals.
National Veterans Creative Arts Festival This event features the creative talents of veterans treated at VA Medical Centers across the country. Local winners go on to compete at the national contest. Artwork, crafts, singing and dancing are part of the festival.
National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic
VA teaches disabled veterans how to master skiing other winter sports.
National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans What happens during the National Salute? VA invites different people to visit VA hospitals on Valentine’s Day and meet with veterans. It has been a fun event for many school kids and a chance to make valentine cards and compete in writing the best school essay.
National Veterans Golden Age Games
The National Veterans Golden Age Games are an outgrowth of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ historic involvement in geriatric care. Many of the events that now form part of these Games began as recreational activities at VA hospitals and nursing home care units across the country. The first National Veterans Golden Age Games took place in Albany, Georgia, in 1985. That year, 115 veterans from VA medical facilities across the United States competed.
