War Related and Unexplained Illness Fellows
- Located at War Related Illness and Injury Research Centers in
Washington, DC and East Orange, NJ
- Interdisciplinary MD and PhD clinicians and researchers
- Accepted with backgrounds in medicine, behavioral psychology,
epidemiology, neuropsychology, physiology, and others
- Participating in fellowship for two years with each site having two fellows
per year
- Expected to publish, make presentations at national meetings, have
access to VA and DoD databases, and implement a research project
- Involved in a curriculum that will include experimental design, statistics,
quality improvement, and epidemiology
- Participating in seminars, grand rounds, clinical care, and research
focused upon deployment related disease states
- Matriculating under experienced research mentors at each site whom will
serve as role-models and regularly meet with fellows to provide feedback
The mission of the War Related Illness and Injury Study Centers (WRIISC)
is to provide service to combat veterans who have difficult-to-diagnose
disabling illnesses through clinical care, risk communication, education, and
research addressing potential environmental exposures and adverse health
outcomes.
The establishment of this VA Advanced Fellowship program will train a cadre
of clinicians with the vision, knowledge, and commitment to lead war related
illness clinical care, research, and education inthe years to come. Each
center has a strong academic affiliation with medical and public health
schools as well as individual specialization and funded research in the
fields of neurology, epidemiology, neuropsychology, basic science and
unexplained illness.
