Advisory Board

In February of 2006 the Section 508 Advisory Board was formally constituted by CIO Robert McFarland. This Board is made up of 24 members from the three VA Administrations and staff offices and is charged with advising the CIO on policies, practices and procedures for implementing Section 508 throughout the Department. As part of its duties this Board is charged with insuring that Section 508 is incorporated into all the business lines of the VA and that all electronic and information technology that the VA uses, procures, maintains or develops provide comparable access to its disabled VA employees and the public as that enjoyed by non disabled individuals.

Charter

The VA ClO establishes this charter and sets forth the specific roles and responsibilities of the Section 508 Advisory Board to support VA’s implementation of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as Amended (29 U.S.C. 794d).

Section 508 applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain or use Electronic and Information Technology (E&IT). Agencies are required to ensure that, when necessary, E&IT allows Federal employees with disabilities to have access to and use information and data comparable to that of non-disabled employees unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency. In addition, Section 508 requires that disabled veterans, and the disabled community at large who seek information or services from VA, have access to and use of information and data available to the public without disabilities unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency.
