Defense Finance and Accounting Service Now VA’s Payroll Provider

WASHINGTON – To increase efficiency and enhance controls within its payroll processes, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has successfully migrated its payroll services to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service.

“This shift allows us to focus on our primary job – serving America’s Veterans – while taking care of the VA employees who serve our Veterans,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.

VA, with nearly 298,000 employees, is the largest civilian agency for which the Department of Defense (DoD) center now processes payroll.  VA’s successful migration of payroll services to the DoD agency was completed on time, under budget, and seamlessly to VA employees.  The effort included significant systems development because of complex federal legislation for paying physicians, nurses and medical clinicians.

“This is one of the steps VA is taking to streamline and simplify internal business processes,” said Edward Murray, VA’s deputy chief financial officer.  “Improved timekeeping and compensation distribution will allow the department to be more accountable and transparent.”

Murray attributed the ease of the transition to a collaborative effort between VA’s payroll migration team and the Department’s three administrations.
