Verification Success Stories - NOVUStar
NOVUStar is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned small business (SDVOSB) that provides training, Professional Business Management and comprehensive Information Technology solutions. This organization is dedicated to providing quality and superior service, through strong executive leadership, a commitment to customer satisfaction, and quality processes.
NOVUStar began their Verification process in 2009. Their initial process was completed in sixty (60) days. Since the change in the Verification process, which began by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in June 2012, NOVUStar was eligible for Reverification and able to undergo the Simplified Reverification Process. This process is designed for SDVOSB or Veteran-Owned small businesses (VOSB) whose verification status will expire in less than 120 days. If no changes have occurred with the business, a new VA Form 0877 shall be signed by the owner of the organization and a certification that no changes have occurred in that business since the last verification. If changes have occurred, the company is still eligible for Reverification and must certify that only the listed changes have occurred in addition to submitting the new VA Form 0877, and submit only the changed documents. All Simplified Reverifications will be reviewed by VA’s Center for Veterans Enterprise (CVE) to determine the changes verify approval, within 30 days. If approved, the organization will receive an approval presentation in approximately seven days.
The president and owner of NOVUStar, Ulises Martinez, submitted the documentation for NOVUStar based on the new Verification process. Mr. Martinez did not experience any issues while undergoing this process. He stated that the CVE staff was very courtesy and professional, even when requesting for the status of his Reverification. He believed that the CVE staff was still learning the new Verification process and as time progressed, they appeared more knowledgeable of the process.
Once CVE received NOVUStar’s documentation, they were approved and re-verified in 16 days. Mr. Martinez accredited this fast process to the new Verification process that is currently in place. He stated that the Verification Assessment Tool is very informative and was very straightforward and a better streamlined process than it was in previous years.
Since receiving this Reverification status, NOVUStar has acquired contracts with VA, other government agencies, and corporations. NOVUStar’s business has expanded significantly and Mr. Martinez accredits this new found success to the Reverification process. He recommends the Verification process to all SDVOSB and VOSB to enhance their business opportunities. He states, “The more exposed you are, the better organized your business can be.”
Mr. Martinez emphasized that the Verification Assessment Tool was very informative, however he recommends for the tool to be more interactive for the end-user, so they are more prepared for the process. He also emphasized that having all of the documentation in order before sending the initial application is essential to the success of receiving Verification. He stated that it will ease the work load of CVE, as well as ease the frustration of the organizations. He has suggested that all organizations going through this process should utilize the Verification Assessment Tool and confirm that all their documentation is in order before sending their initial application.
Mr. Martinez is very impressed by the new system. He stated, “The new system in place is really remarkable. I was allowed to place documentation in a systematic way”. Although other government agencies have verification processes, he states that based on organizational functions (i.e. Finance, Human Resources, Marketing), VA’s Verification process is the superior process to utilize. He states, “This new process that’s in place made all the difference.”
