About the VHA MRSA Prevention Initiative
VHA launches National Initiative
to reduce health-care acquired MRSA infection rates
among our nation's veterans!
The VHA MRSA Prevention Initiative began as a pilot
program at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System
(VAPHS) in 2001. Based upon the sustained
positive outcomes at VAPHS and recognizing the
public health implications of MRSA, the program was
expanded to 17 additional medical facilities across
the nation in August 2006. Preliminary results
from these facilities prompted a National Directive
that requires all VHA medical facilities to begin
implementation of the prevention initiative in at
least one ICU or acute care unit by March 15, 2007.
As the largest integrated health care system in the
country, VHA has truly taken the lead in the war
against MRSA through the establishment of this
nationwide prevention strategy. Prevention of
MRSA infections is possible and prevention is
everyone's responsibility. The National
Initiative seeks to capitalize on the success at the
original pilot sites and further improve their
efforts throughout the VA health system.
