Phase I of the National Initiative
included seventeen VA medical facilities (beta
sites). Each facility underwent a competitive
application process in order to become a
participant. Beta Sites received a $50,000
grant to assist in implementation. Funds could
be used at the discretion of the facility.
Facilities were required to pilot the program on at
least one unit within the first two months of
participation. The expectation was that
facility-wide implementation would be completed
within a year. In only five months, 11 of 17
beta sites have succeeded in facility-wide
implementation for their acute care divisions.
Additionally, 5 of 17 have expanded the program to
include all of long-term care. The experiences
and outcomes of the Beta Site facilities will
continue to serve as a model for Phase II
implementation.
