Sandra Griffiths, RN, Receives VA National Award of Excellence in Nursing

Sandra GriffithsSandra Griffiths, R.N., received the Secretary of Veterans Affairs Award for Excellence in Nursing at a ceremony in Washington D.C., on May 7th 2002, for her contribution to VA health care. Anthony J. Principi, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, presented Ms. Griffiths with this national award to recognize her achievements in nursing care.

Ms. Griffiths has worked as a staff nurse in the Dialysis Unit at the VA Pittsburgh, University Drive Division, for the past fifteen years. With her dialysis expertise, Ms. Griffiths provides the renal patient with optimal nursing care, accurately assessing each patient, and developing care plans to reflect all aspects of patient care. In addition, Ms. Griffiths continually volunteers to assume additional duties, including hemodialysis preceptor, renal transplant coordinator, and preceptor for the dialysis water treatment system.

Ms. Griffiths is also active in the community, providing health care teaching to veterans at community health fairs and giving hemodialysis tours to college and high school students. As transplant coordinator for hemodialysis patients, she has acted as a liaison between the VAPHS and transplant centers to facilitate evaluations for these patients. Since the VAPHS has recently been approved as a renal transplant center, she now coordinates these evaluations through the VAPHS Transplant Program.

Ms. Griffiths is a major contributor to the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System and she demonstrates excellence in clinical, educational, and leadership skills on a daily basis.
