Between Jan. 2004
and June 2004, 22 liver transplants and 3 kidney transplants were
performed at the VA Pittsburgh.
The transplant coordinators are registered nurses who are in charge of the care of transplant patients. They begin to follow the patients as soon as they are assigned to the VAPHS through CO's referral system. They are also in charge of pre- and post-operative teaching for the patients as well as teaching the referring VAs for when the patients go home. They continue to follow patients' progress even after they return to their home
VAs. Currently these 4 nurses are following approximately 300 patients.
