The Center for Treatment of Addictive Disorders offers comprehensive
rehabilitation services to veterans with addictive disorders at the Highland
Drive, University Drive, and Aspinwall sites of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare
System. Veterans are encouraged to recognize that recovery from and addictive
disorder is a long-term process requiring abstinence and behavioral change.
Special emphasis is placed on early intervention, relapse prevention, and
compliance with a sound recovery plan.
Treatment is based on the philosophy that an addictive disorder is highly
treatable, but complex, progressive illness which negatively affects not only
the individual, but also the family members and other significant individuals in
the person's life. These negative effects usually are seen in the form of
serious life problems centering around the family, employment, health, emotions,
personality changes, spirituality, legal difficulties, and/or financial
problems.
Treatment is provided by a multidisciplinary team with specialized training
in treatment of addictive disorders and compulsive behaviors and is composed of
physicians, psychologists, social workers, nurses, rehabilitation specialists,
and addiction counselors. Additional services are provided by clergy,
therapeutic recreation specialists, dieticians, pharmacists, consultants, and
volunteers.
Highland Drive Program:
CTAD Outpatient Clinic:
The CTAD Outpatient Clinic provides a range of assessment, treatment and social
services to veterans. Group therapies are prevalent and use of a
psychoeducational/relapse prevention model. Dual Diagnosis group therapies are
available to those veterans suffering from a combination of substance abuse and
psychiatric disorders, such as depression, manic-depression, or schizophrenia. A
First Offenders program provides educational and evaluation services to veterans
who have encountered legal consequences related to their addiction. Senior
Substance Abuse groups address the problems unique to older veterans.
Opiod Substitution Therapy Clinic:
The Opiod Substitution Therapy Clinic provides pharmacological treatment of
opiate addiction on an outpatient basis. Veterans are maintained on methadone or
other opiod agonists in treating their dependence. Individual counseling,
educational activities, and a full range of support services are provided.
Substance Use/PTSD Team:
The Substance Use/PTSD Team is a specialized outpatient treatment clinic
established to treat veterans and their families who have problems with chemical
dependency and post-traumatic stress disorder. The primary treatment goals are
learning to cope with PTSD and related anger and depression without alcohol or
drugs and avoiding drug alcohol relapse. Individual, group, family and couple
services and provided. Supportive treatment and crisis intervention are also
available.
University Drive Program:
Substance Abuse Detection and Early Intervention Program:
This program provides early identification and provision of treatment for
veterans with substance abuse problems. Though early detection and education the
team is able to implement treatment and intervention strategies at an earlier
stage, prior to the disruption in employment, family relationships, and
development of medical problems associated with prolonged substance dependence.
Aspinwall Programs:
Screening, assessment, group/individual counseling, case management, and
referral services are offered at the Aspinwall Progressive Care Center. These
services are designed to help the veteran stay drug/alcohol-free during the sometimes
prolonged stay for evaluation and rehabilitation and to prepare the
veteran for placement in an appropriate treatment program upon discharge.
