Biography of Thomas Bird Bear
Thomas Bird Bear is the Tribal Government Relations Specialist for the Southwest Region covering the following states: Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Thomas Bird Bear is from the Fort Berthold reservation in North Dakota and after an enlistment in the U.S. Army, graduated with Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctorate degrees from the University of North Dakota and is a member of the State Bar Association of North Dakota. He was a member of the Tribal Business Council of the Three Affiliated Tribes and served a four-year term from 1996-2000. Thomas was a Lecturer at the University of North Dakota and the Fort Berthold Community College.
Upon leaving tribal office, Thomas was an Attorney-Advisor, Indian Probate, with the Office of Hearings and Appeals, U.S. Department of the Interior, (DOI). He then delivered training on Federal Indian Trust Responsibilities and Indian Probate for DOI/federal agencies and Indian tribes at the Office of the Special Trustee for American Indians.
Thomas was recently an adjunct lecturer in the Native American Studies Department at the University of New Mexico and at the UNM School of Law. In 2007 he co-authored an article in "Native Peoples" magazine with editor Daniel Gibson entitled "At Work in the Justice System: Native Law Professionals."
