Coordination of Care in VHA

Policy issue: In response to the changing needs of the veteran population, VHA continues to explore various approaches of delivering healthcare to veterans. Often times, restructuring of care processes is proposed to better match patient need to healthcare services, including making use of the latest technology.

Assessment:VATAP produced three systematic reviews in response to requests from VHA managers on topics related to coordination of care in VHA.

Picture Archiving and Communication Systems: A Systematic Review of Published Studies of Diagnostic Accuracy, Radiology Work Processes, Outcomes of Care, and Cost, August, 1997. Addresses four critical questions on diagnostic accuracy, work process efficiency, impact on patient outcomes, and cost savings associated with the use of PACS in clinical settings.

Impacts of Case Management Programs, July, 2000. Identifies case management strategies that were shown to have impact on patient care.

Physiologic Telemonitoring in Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), January, 2001 . Evaluates the evidence of effectiveness of remote physiologic monitoring on outcomes of care for CHF.
