Brief Alcohol Intervention

The Brief Alcohol Intervention is a structured psychosocial approach to the treatment of excessive drinking which utilizes the Health Promotion Workbooks in order to help patients reduce their alcohol intake to safe levels. The BAI is based on the principles of motivational interviewing, an approach to discussing patients’ problems, concerns, and ambivalence about their drinking, and to help individuals recognize the risks associated with their level of alcohol use. It is a supportive, respectful approach that is persuasive without being coercive or cajoling. The BAI addresses issues such as the effects of alcohol on health and body systems, the reasons patients’ drinking patterns may be problematic, how modification of alcohol use can result in specific health benefits, and methods for patients to change their drinking habits.
