Medical Management
Medical Management (MM) is a psychosocial intervention developed by the NIAAA sponsored COMBINE study. The goal of MM is to provide a basic, minimal form of clinical intervention supporting pharmacotherapy and reduction in drinking. This model of care supports the use of naltrexone or acamprostate in the treatment of alcohol dependence. MM uses a number of strategies to increase adherence, including direct feedback on adherence and development of a supportive relationship with the Behavioral Health Specialist through frequent visits. MM also incorporates aspects of motivational interviewing to reduce excessive drinking. It promotes collaboration and integration with the patient’s overall health care and focuses on functional improvement as well as behavior change.
