IMPROVING MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT OF DEPRESSION: HOW CAN THE BHL HELP?

  • The BHL works to facilitate accurate diagnosis, effective treatment and follow up of patients who screen positive for depression by their Primary Care Clinicians.
  • The BHL addresses important diagnostic features such as identifying degree of impairment and co-morbid psychiatric disorders.
  • The BHL identifies issues that may be discussed at the next primary care visit or may require further assessment or treatment.
  • The BHL can facilitate referral to a Behavioral Health Specialist to assist in more complex cases, or when patients are slow to respond.
  • Assessment by the BHL provides rapid triage for those patients who need referral to specialty services (mental health and/or addiction clinics).
  • The BHL health technicians encourage patients to participate in their own health care.
  • The BHL recommends that Primary Care Clinicians use the BHL service for monitoring depression treatment. See the Depression Monitoring section of this website for more information.
