GOALS FOR THE PATIENT
- The goal for at-risk drinkers is to drink responsibly in order to reduce the harmful effects of heavy drinking.
- The goal for those with alcohol dependence is engagement in formal treatment and often abstinence.
- The goal for those with substance abuse problems is engagement in formal treatment and abstinence.
- Reductions in excessive alcohol use, dependence, or misuse can lead to decreased disability and improved health and self esteem.
- Remember, alcohol use is a persistent behavior. Patients should be consistently reminded of the dangers of excessive alcohol use and the benefits of reducing.
- The BHL provides initial monitoring after the initial steps toward treatment.
