The structure of the VISN 4 MIRECC is intended to maximize synergies between its research, educational, and clinical programs.  The Clinical, Research, and Education Teams (CRE) of the Center are designed to promote and sustain the goals of the MIRECC.  These teams consist of collaborative groups of clinicians, scientists, and educators working together on common areas.  The CRE activities are organized by content area into three teams for Mental Health Care in General Medical Settings, Medical Care of Patients with Serious Mental Illness, and Addictions.  Organizing core functions of the MIRECC within problem-oriented teams facilitates the translation of research findings into new models of clinical care and enhances our ability to provide education about cutting edge developments in care delivery.  Problems in clinical care and with adherence to practice guidelines also are easily translated into the research enterprise of each team so that the research can be maximally useful in the clinical setting.

In addition to the CRE teams, there are six infrastructure support cores:

1) a Research Core that oversees and supports new and ongoing research efforts;

2) an Education Core that provides training and education for clinical and administrative personnel who treat veterans with comorbid conditions as well as for patients and their families;

3) a Clinical Core that characterizes current services, enhances the delivery of guideline-adherent care, provides resources for clinical consultation, and establishes clinical demonstration projects;

4) a Methodology and Evaluation Core that provides support for the design, implementation and quality control of research, with a subgroup that provides specialized expertise in neuroimaging methods development;

5) a Psychiatric Genetics Core that addresses human studies identifying genetic contributions to mental illness/substance use disorders and treatment response; and

6) an Administrative Core that handles all administrative functions of the MIRECC.
