Several start-up projects, conducted over the first 2–3 years of the Center, were developed as part of the original
VISN 4 MIRECC application. In addition, this MIRECC awarded seed money funding for four pilot projects in our first year, six pilot projects in our second year, five pilots in our third year, three pilots in our fourth year, and two pilots in our fifth year of funding. In 2002, the MIRECC began funding "second round start-up projects," or core projects. Because of existing research strengths in both the PVAMC and the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, we have been able to make rapid progress in the implementation of these projects.
