VISN 8 Patient Safety Center of Inquiry, Tampa

Mission

The mission of our Center is to support clinicians in providing safe patient care by designing and testing clinical innovations, technological solutions, and patient safety improvement systems.  Our research efforts target two patient populations with compromised mobility:  frail elderly and persons with disabilities.

The VISN 8 Patient Safety Center of Inquiry (PSCI) is located at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Our Center focuses on research translation to prevent adverse events associated with mobility and immobility. The Center has four foci: patient falls, safe patient handling, hospital bed/wheelchair safety and wandering. We continue to build on our strengths including strong local, VISN and national support, recruitment and retention of a strong interdisciplinary staff of experts in patient safety, and strong collaborative partnerships to facilitate dissemination and enhance the impact of our projects. Our PSCI focuses on translating research findings into practice, specializing in designing and testing clincial tools (e.g., algorithms, protocols, policy templates, resource guides, patient and staff education materials) to facilitate patient safety and reduce adverse events.

The goals of the center are to (1) promote safe use of technology to prevent adverse events associated with mobility or immobility; and (2) promote a culture of safety to support clinicians in providing safe patient care and safe working environments.
