Center for Women Veterans

2014 Women's History Month

2014 Women's History Month

March is Women’s History Month

This recognition, led by the National Women’s History Project, first began as a national celebration week on March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.”  In 1988, the entire month of March was designated as “Women’s History Month,” and it remains a national month of celebration.  Annually, the White House issues a Proclamation for Women’s History Month.  The 2014 theme for Women’s History Month was “Celebrating Women of Character, Courage & Commitment.”

VA participated in Women’s History Month by celebrating the generations of success of women and women Veterans.  To tie into the theme of Character, Courage & Commitment, VA focused the month on “Women Veterans Make History.”  The character, courage, and commitment demonstrated by women Veterans provide a foundation of future successes in their own post-military endeavors.  The skills and experiences women Veterans gain from their military service lead to a lifetime of achievement within their families, careers, and communities.  VA is committed to honoring women Veterans and providing them with the benefits and services that they have earned.

Throughout the month of March, VA hosted a series of events to celebrate the successes of women Veterans in multiple sectors of society, including, but not limited to, the private sector, nonprofits, government (federal, state, local), and within their communities, to provide information on services available to women Veterans and elevate awareness of women Veterans roles in society.  The Center for Women Veterans used this month and the events to kick-off their 20 year anniversary celebration.  Throughout 2014, the Center will coordinate events celebrating Women Veterans and their successes.
