Risk Communication

Risk communication is a key aspect of the War-Related Illness and Injury Study Center’s approach to patient care. It involves listening and responding to patient needs and concerns in a respectful, engaging, and informative manner. Patients can discuss environmental exposures and their health status with health care professionals at the WRIISC. The risk communication program also develops targeted information on potential environmental exposures and war-related illnesses for veterans, their families, and health care providers. The development of communication strategies and messages is guided by the veterans’ concerns and information needs. The risk communication program is flexible, and it serves the changing information needs of America’s veterans.

The risk communication program is currently surveying veterans who served in Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, and Bosnia-Kosovo. This survey looks at current health status, health and environmental exposure concerns and the best ways to communicate with veterans. Results from the study will be published in the medical literature, and highlights will be posted to this Web site.
