Virtru Pro

Virtru Pro provides VA a secure method of exchanging information with community providers using encrypted email. Implementing a standardized method of electronic communication with community providers and organizations is among the top priorities for VA Community Care, and Virtru Pro is one of many innovative solutions VA is employing to enhance care coordination for Veterans and to become a better partner for community providers.

Benefits of Virtru Pro

Enhanced Care Coordination: Virtru Pro improves care coordination by ensuring VA and community providers can share patient documentation in a timely manner. This allows Veterans to receive the care and follow-ups they need more quickly and appropriately.

Reduced Administrative Burdens: Virtru Pro reduces the time it takes to share Veterans’ protected health information (PHI) by allowing VA staff to send this information securely over email instead of via fax or by mail.

Improved HIPAA Compliance: Virtru Pro improves Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance by reducing paper medical records and providing integrity controls and encryption to meet HIPAA transmission security requirements.

Access to Virtru Pro directly through email: It allows only the intended recipient of the email to decrypt and respond to secure messages. It enables recipients to do so in their existing email account without installing software, using portals, or creating accounts.

To Start Using Virtru Pro

You do not have to install Virtru Pro to be able to receive and reply to secure messages from VA. For community providers, Virtru Pro is accessed directly through email in the same way you receive other emails. Within your email account, a Virtru-secured email will appear in the same format as a regular email, but will only allow the intended recipient of the email to decrypt and respond to the message. To reply, you just have to follow a couple of steps to authenticate that you are the correct recipient.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Virtru Pro?

Virtru Pro is an encrypted e-mail technology that provides VA a secure method of exchanging information with community providers. It enables recipients to do so in their existing email account without installing software, using portals, or creating accounts.

Does Virtru Pro require that the recipient install any software?

No. Recipients will be able to securely reply to VA initiated secure emails, including the ability to add attachments. This can be accomplished without installing any software.

Which do I use, Virtru Pro or Community Viewer?

Actually, you can use both! For a provider to access Community Viewer, they must be provided a user name and password. You can use Virtru Pro to provide this information securely.

More information about Community Viewer may be found at Community Viewer.

Can prescriptions be sent via Virtu Pro?

At this time, Virtru Pro is not to be used to submit prescriptions to pharmacy.

Can community providers initiate a secure email to VA?

No. Recipients will only be able to securely reply to VA-initiated emails, including the ability to add attachments.

Virtru Pro offers several free email extensions and apps for encrypting an email. Other software may need to be installed and licenses may be required for recipients to send unsolicited emails to VA.

If you have questions about obtaining Virtru Pro, please contact Virtru Pro Support at support@virtru.com.

Why do responses not include the initial conversation (message history)?

This is by design to protect the security of your message. When the replies are sent using the Secure Reader, only the response will be provided. If the response is sent using one of the free email extensions or apps to reply to a message, the full message thread will be provided.

I am unable to open an encrypted email sent using Virtru Pro.

First, please try to resolve this problem by reviewing the Reading and Responding to a Message Protected by Virtru instructions on the Virtru website.
