Presidential Management Fellows (PMF)

Four People Seated

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program is a premier leadership development program across the Federal Government for advanced degree candidates at the entry level of their career. Many PMFs – from a variety of academic disciplines and career paths – choose to complete their fellowships at VA each year. Our PMFs have a clear interest in and commitment to excellence in the leadership and management of public policies and programs. During the PMF Program, you are provided unique leadership, training, and development opportunities, and are expected to be a change leader at VA. If you are a current PMF, visit Pathways at VA for more information and resources to help you throughout your program.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants go through a rigorous assessment and selection process that measures writing, interpersonal, analytic, and leadership skills. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to pay close attention to application deadlines and to spend ample time preparing for each step of the application process.

Generally, applicants must be completing or have completed, within the past two years, a qualifying advanced degree – master's, law, or doctoral program. For the most up-to-date eligibility requirements for the PMF Program, please visit www.pmf.gov.

Qualifications

Qualifications vary by individual PMF position. Job openings for the program are posted online each spring and are available only to PMF finalists and Federal employees.

General Training and Developmental Experiences

VA sponsors orientation programs and training forums for all PMFs. Additional training opportunities are provided by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and other agencies and programs. As a PMF, you will be able to create an Individual Development Plan (IDP) for your two-year program, participate in developmental learning opportunities, network with other PMFs, and contribute to the larger mission of VA in a meaningful way. While VA provides many developmental opportunities for PMFs, you are also expected to take charge of your own learning, career development, and advancement. Those who successfully complete program requirements may also be eligible for conversion to a full-time position. For a complete list of program and conversion requirements, review the VA Pathways Programs Requirements

Application Process

The PMF application process is structured and thorough and is refined from year to year. Please see the PMF website (www.pmf.gov) for details on the current application process. Applicants are strongly encouraged to pay close attention to application deadlines and to prepare thoroughly for each step of the process.
