National Diversity Internship Program (HCSC)

The VA National Diversity Internship Program (NDIP) provides internship opportunities to diverse undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled, full-time or part-time, in a degree-seeking program at an accredited post-secondary institution. Sessions offered during the Spring, Summer, and/or Fall for students from various institutions including, but not limited to: Minority Serving Institutions (i.e., Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, Asian American Pacific Islanders and Tribal Colleges and Universities).

Information for Students

VA uses the services of various organizations to identify students from diverse backgrounds for our internship program. To be accepted into the NDIP, students must be in good standing; currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree seeking program, full-time or part-time from an accredited post-secondary institution; and be a U.S. citizen (a lawful permanent resident or otherwise legally eligible to work in the United States per FAR Part 22.18). Students interested in participating in the NDIP must apply directly to the approved participating vendors:

Students selected to participate in the NDIP will receive bi-weekly stipend payments from the selecting vendor, and if needed, transportation to the internship site, and housing arranged at the internship location. VA Mentor Information

Hosting Requirements

Organizations requesting to host a student intern must:

  • Receive approval from the appropriate organizational official to authorize sponsorship of an intern (Director, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Branch Chief, etc.)
  • Assign a Primary and Alternate Mentor who will interact with the intern and provide guidance on project tasks and assignments. Additional Mentor requirements are detailed in the Mentor Agreement.
  • Obtain approval for funding prior to applying.
  • Submit a completed application and all required documents by the deadlines listed below.

Funding

Organizations requesting an intern must provide their own funding for the cost of the intern at the time of application submission. Applications received without signed funding documents (IFCAP’s VA Form 90-2237 or IFAMS’ IPR) will be considered incomplete and will not be approved.

Mentor Application and Deadlines

  • The NDIP Mentor application program costs and more detailed information are available via the NDIP Application Portal. Please contact NDIP for more information and access. The NDIP Application Portal can only be accessed by VA employees.
