Brian Y.
Brian served in the Army for 28 years and deployed several times, including during the invasion of Iraq. After his last deployment, he spent a period of time as an inpatient at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. His transition back to civilian life has been difficult and included periods of homelessness. At the time of his participation in the Photovoice project, Brian was working on his reconnecting with his children and had recently taken a family road trip to move his daughter back to college.

![This place [The Divine Lorraine] reminds me of being at Walter Reed. People [other Veterans] were messed up in there. Some with no legs; some with half a face where they just saved them. A lot of messed up people in there. But we don’t look at it like that, not most of us. I see them the way they used to be.](img/vets/vet_briany_03.jpg)
![I took this out the window, driving through Iowa. I would love to stay [there] and just lay on the grass over at that little river. There was nothing bad about this whole area. It’s real peaceful.](img/vets/vet_briany_05.jpg)

![I’d rather be [at the VA] than anywhere else. It’s something about just being around other vets; we all get along. We don’t even know each other, you know. It’s not like going to civilian hospitals…I feel more comfortable in a Veteran’s hospital than anywhere else.](img/vets/vet_briany_freequote.jpg)
