M.D.K.
MDK joined the Marines for the discipline and sense of purpose that military service brought into his life. While away on his second deployment, MDK’s family suffered the untimely death of his sister. MDK felt as though his parents needed him, so he left the Marines. It was difficult for him to find his place outside of the Marines, and MDK had problems with drugs and the law. At the time of his participation in the Photovoice project, MDK was receiving treatment through the VA and trying to find a new purpose for his life.

![[His] name’s Pogo…that dog was awesome. He had this hop in his step, but it didn’t slow him down.. He’s like, ‘Yeah, I got one leg; I’m still going. It’s not stopping me.’ I like that.](img/vets/vet_michaelk_dog.jpg)

![[I]t was pretty cool what somebody did with [the airplane]. They put it there like it was crashing. But then, they hollowed it out. Half of the structure is glass so you can see in, and they put UV lights in it. It’s a greenhouse…Out of this war machine, life grows. There’s art there.](img/vets/vet_michaelk_plane.jpg)
