Help spread the word about resources for mental and emotional well-being this May, Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and offices within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) have coordinated social media campaigns to spread the word about mental health resources and stories of strength and resiliency from Veterans.

VHA’s Office of Community Engagement (OCE) is offering a call to action: Encourage the Veterans you know, health care providers, caretakers, families, loved ones, and internal and external partners to explore and participate in the Mental Health Awareness Month activities below:

  • The #MoreThanEverBefore Challenge: The President’s Roadmap to Empower Veterans and End a National Tragedy of Suicide (PREVENTS), which is an Executive Order, task force, and VA office introduced its #MoreThanEverBefore national challenge. All Americans are encouraged to post photographs or videos to social media channels (along with the hashtag) demonstrating how they are taking care of their emotional well-being, whether by doing yoga, painting, running, video chatting with loved ones, or whatever works for them. According to PREVENTS: “This May, #MoreThanEverBefore, we must pay attention to our mental health and emotional well-being. It isn’t an option, it’s a necessity.”
  • The “Now Is The Time” Campaign: VHA’s Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention (OMHSP) has also instituted a Mental Health Awareness Month campaign: “Now Is The Time.” This month, Veterans can to take steps in their mental health journeys by visiting maketheconnection.net/mhm. Make the Connection is OMHSP’s online resource and public health campaign that aims to promote mental health literacy among Veterans the public. The Make the Connection website offers mental health resources, stories of recovery from Veterans, and information on services such as applying for VA health care benefits and exploring VA telehealth services.

“Mental health and well-being are vital, especially during these challenging times,” said Dr. Tracy L. Weistreich, OCE Nurse Executive. “Most of the national and community-level partnerships OCE supports have a suicide prevention or mental health well-being component or focus. Our office aims to uplift any and all efforts in this space all year long, especially in May during Mental Health Awareness Month.”
