About the VA Multiple Sclerosis Centers of Excellence

The VA created the VA MS Centers of Excellence (MSCoE) in 2003. These Centers help people learn about multiple sclerosis (MS) and how it affects Veterans. The MSCoE has two main Centers - one in the East and one in the West. These Centers work with MS clinics across the country to provide care to Veterans. The MSCoE teams up with Veterans, families, doctors, and healthcare groups to help Veterans with MS live better lives.

Mission

  1. Make MS healthcare better and the same quality everywhere in the country
  2. Help all Veterans get MS care through a network of VA MS doctors
  3. Provide training, resources, and support to Veterans, caregivers, and VA doctors
  4. Use teamwork in patient care, teaching, research, and data work

  • Run special fellowship training programs for doctors who want to become MS experts
  • Connect Veterans and families to VA resources, Veteran groups, and national MS organizations

Oversight

Several groups make sure MSCoE is doing good work. The National Neurology Program Executive Director and Neurology Clinical Programs Executive Director supervise MSCoE activities. The Government Accountability Office and VHA Neurology Centers Advisory Subcommittee check MSCoE's work every year. An independent group does a complete review every five years. Each year MSCoE publishes a report that shows what the program has accomplished.
