Multiple Sclerosis Caregivers and Care Partners

Many people don’t think of themselves as “caregivers.” But caregivers can be daughters, wives, husbands, sons, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, partners, and friends. Caregivers do many different tasks to help their loved one at home and in the community. Ask yourself, do you,

  • Help your loved one schedule doctor appointments?
  • Drive your loved one to the doctor or pharmacy?
  • Help your loved one get dressed, shower, or take medication?
  • Help your loved one get in and out of bed?
  • Talk with doctors, nurses, social workers, and others about your loved one’s medical care or benefits?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you are a caregiver. You may qualify for caregiver services at the VA.

VA Caregiver Support Program

The VA’s Caregiver Support program offers resources, education, and support to caregivers of Veterans. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The Veteran doesn’t need to have a service-connected condition
  • The Veteran can have served during any time period
  • You don’t need to fill out a formal application

How to Get Help:

  • Contact your local Caregiver Support Coordinator
  • Call the VA Caregiver Support Line: 1-855-260-3274 (toll-free, 8 am to 8 pm Eastern Time)
  • Join a REACH VA (Resources for Enhancing All Caregivers Health) caregiver skills development program

Remember to Care for Yourself! Taking care of a loved one is important and honorable work. But it’s also important to take care of yourself. When you’re healthy, you can provide better care for your loved one with multiple sclerosis (MS).
