VA OAA Nursing Education Programs

Access to high quality, timely health care requires an adequate supply and presence of competent nursing workforce. In recent years, OAA has implemented multiple innovative nursing workforce training programs to enhance nursing education and practice by facilitating a stronger and mutually beneficial partnership between VA and Schools of Nursing (SON) across the nation. To address the current national shortage of experienced nursing workforce, the VA OAA pioneered unique Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) residency programs within the VHA designed to develop competent, confident, practice-ready RNs and NPs equipped with the knowledge and skills to address the specific needs of our nation's Veterans in the VHA and community.
