Reasonable Accommodations

Reasonable Accommodation (RA) & Personal Assistance Services (PAS) for Employees and Applicants with Disabilities.

Reasonable Accommodation

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals, including job applicants and employees with disabilities, unless doing so would cause undue hardship. Reasonable accommodations ensure that applicants with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate in the application process and be considered for a job. Additionally, these accommodations enable employees with disabilities to enjoy the same benefits and privileges of employment as those without disabilities.

Request for reasonable accommodation may be made either in writing or orally at any time by employee with a targeted disability. Requests for reasonable accommodation can be submitted to the employee’s supervisor, manager, Reasonable Accommodation Coordinator (RAC), Human Resources office, or contact identified in a vacancy announcement.

Personal Assistance Services

Personal Assistance Services (PAS) are designed to empower employees with targeted disabilities, enabling them to perform job-related tasks and specific functions effectively. Applicants or employees may request reasonable accommodations to receive assistance during the job application process, while competing for a position, while performing their job duties, or to ensure equal access to employment benefits due to their medical condition.

These services enable individuals to perform daily living activities that might otherwise be challenging due to their disabilities. PAS includes vital support for tasks such as dressing, eating, and using restrooms, as well as various supportive activities that promote inclusivity and accessibility in the workplace.

Examples of PAS include retrieving items that are out of reach, providing travel assistance for employees with mobility challenges, assisting employees with cognitive disabilities in making informed decisions, reading printed materials for visually impaired employees, and ensuring the availability of sign language interpreters during meetings for deaf employees.

Employees with targeted disabilities may request reasonable accommodations either in writing or orally at any time. Requests can be submitted to the employee’s supervisor, manager, Reasonable Accommodation Coordinator (RAC), Human Resources office, or any contact person identified in a job vacancy announcement.
