Objective

The purpose of this webinar is to highlight those programs that address the behavioral health needs of AI/AN Veterans. In addition, this webinar will present and discuss:

  • Specific activities underway in HHS Region 10 (AK, ID, OR, WA) to address the needs of AI/AN Veterans
  • Work by Federal, State, and/or Local programs and stakeholders to improve outcomes for AI/AN Veterans

This webinar featured David Dickinson, Regional Administrator of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). SAMHSA funds Tribal Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) Centers, which provides training and technical assistance (TTA) on mental and substance use disorders, suicide prevention, and the promotion of mental health. Michelle Sobel, Behavioral Health Consultant of the Indian Health Service (IHS). IHS is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. Terry Bentley, Tribal Government Relations Specialist, Western Region of the Veterans Affairs Office of Tribal Government Relations.

Speakers also included Sharon Strutz-Norton of Veteran’s Affairs (VA), Cedric Decory of the Native American Veterans Program and George Bennett, Sr. of the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium.
